When you’re building or upgrading a packaging line, it’s tempting to think of each machine as a separate piece of equipment. But when case erectors, case packers, case sealers, and palletizers work together as one integrated system, the entire line can operate more efficiently.
Getting the layout right is only part of the equation because once equipment is in place, it also needs to talk to itself. If you’re planning a new line from the ground up, see how we approach case packer integration and floor layout.
At Hamrick, we design packaging solutions with the full production process in mind, helping customers get the most from their available floorspace while keeping products moving smoothly from one stage to the next.
Designing Around Your Production Environment
Every facility presents different challenges. Limited floorspace, structural columns, existing equipment, and other obstacles can affect how you configure a compact packaging line. We account for these factors during the engineering process rather than trying to fit standard equipment into a space where it may not work well.
A well-designed line also needs enough case accumulation and buffering between machines. This lets equipment maintain maximum throughput without unnecessary stops when one part of the line temporarily runs at a different speed.
Keeping Equipment in Sync
Integrating the case sealer with the case packer and palletizer allows the machines to communicate with one another. That communication can help prevent small issues from becoming larger production interruptions.
For example, if a backup occurs downstream from the case sealer, the sealer can receive that information and communicate upstream to stop producing cases until the backup is cleared. Instead of machines continuing to run independently and creating a jam, the system can respond to changing conditions throughout the line.
Benefits of an integrated system can include:
- Synchronized machine speeds and production flow
- Fewer jams and unnecessary stops
- Better use of accumulation and buffering
- Improved communication between equipment
- Simplified operation and troubleshooting
Simplifying Controls for Operators
Integration isn’t just about machines communicating behind the scenes. The operator experience matters, too.
Clean I/O integration with the rest of the line—typically using an Ethernet protocol—is an important consideration for our customers. We also design our packer, sealer, and palletizer HMI screens to have a similar, familiar look and feel. This consistency can make it easier for operators to understand the equipment and manage the line without learning completely different interfaces for every machine.
The result is a packaging system designed around how your operation actually works—not simply a collection of standalone machines.
Build a More Connected Packaging Line
Whether you’re designing a new compact line or integrating equipment into an existing operation, considering the entire system can help you improve throughput, reduce interruptions, and simplify day-to-day operation.
